Promotion of Green Hydrogen in East Africa

The Promotion of Green Hydrogen in East Africa Project aims to enhance the framework conditions and coordination to boost the adoption of green hydrogen in Eastern Africa. The project is carried out by the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE). GIZ funds the project through the H2-diplo Project, which is financed by the German Federal Foreign Office. The preparatory phase of the project began in 2025. It led to the development of the draft EAC Green Hydrogen Baseline Study, various consultation workshops, and the Eastern Africa Regional Green Hydrogen Symposium, organised in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Promotion of Green Hydrogen in East Africa Project will address the following

The project will positively impact all three arms of sustainability, namely environmental, economic and social, as well as their intersectionality.

Below are the expected outputs for the project.

Output 1: Ensuring an enabling environment for increased green hydrogen adoption in the East African Community is strengthened. This output will leverage the findings of the baseline study 'Green Hydrogen in Eastern Africa ' to develop regulatory frameworks that promote regional uptake.

Output 2: Building technical capacities and knowledge dissemination for increased adoption of green hydrogen in Eastern Africa. Through trainings of governments and organising events and workshops to facilitate knowledge exchange, foster strategic networking, and build partnerships that promote the regional uptake and continuity of green hydrogen initiatives.
